We are thrilled to report that TLC has been awarded a Community Impact Arts Grant! This grant, from the Department of Arts and Culture on behalf of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, recognizes organizations that create community impact through their creative arts programming.
The Power of Arts in Our Community
For many years, in both my personal experience as a ballet dancer and my professional experience as the executive director of TLC, I have known that the arts are one of the most effective ways of impacting a community. By participating in the arts, individuals have the opportunity to express themselves more fully, to move their bodies in nourishing and life-affirming ways, and to grow soft skills, such as emotional regulation and teamwork.
The arts do not discriminate; they promise the same benefits to all who participate in whichever way they feel inspired to do so. At our Creative Arts Day Program for Adults with Disabilities, Remy Nagatani is a proud member of the Play Production Team, Steven Mendez is the incredible artist who independently created and painted the backdrop for TLC’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and Vanessa is the talented artist who has blossomed from one of our newest students into a show-stealer in our most recent showcase. They are living proof of the impact that participating in the arts can have.
Our goal for our theater events is to give students and audiences a professional theater experience. Audiences walk away impacted, having witnessed, supported, applauded, and talked about what they saw. At “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” audience members raved about the skill and dedication of the artists, as well as the teams of support staff and teachers working behind the scenes.
How the Grant Will Help Our Artists
For TLC and our students, the $6,450 grant means we will be able to provide additional materials and support for our students’ theatrical productions. Our students and their teachers have produced many memorable theater productions at the TLC Black Box Theater, including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Greatest Family Story,” “Cinderella,” and the upcoming holiday favorite, “A Christmas Carol”
