Growing Up in the TLC Community
Remy Nagatani has been a proud member of the TLC community since 2009, growing and thriving here for more than 15 years. Over the years, TLC has been a place where she could build friendships, explore new opportunities and grow in confidence through our Creative Arts Day Program that encourages both artistic expression and personal development. In 2011, she also began attending the Saturday Program while still living at home with her parents, deepening her connection to the TLC community.
A major milestone came in 2016 when Remy moved into the Residential Program at TLC and became a member of Donna House. The transition marked an exciting step toward greater independence. At Donna House, Remy found not only a home but a welcoming community where she could share daily life with peers and staff who support and celebrate one another.
She enjoys participating in household routines, helping prepare meals and keeping her space organized. Evenings often include board games, conversations around the dinner table, or planning weekend outings with housemates. From holiday celebrations with other TLC homes to coffee shop trips and community events, Donna House is where Remy’s sense of belonging truly flourishes.
Discovering Her Stage in TLC’s Creative Arts Day Program for Adults with Disabilities
In 2023, Remy joined TLC’s Creative Arts Day Program, an inclusive arts and community program in Reseda that provides opportunities for participants to explore performance, music and visual arts. It quickly became a space where she could explore new forms of expression through creative activities for adults with disabilities. Over time, she transformed from a quiet and reserved participant into a confident and expressive performer.
Today, Remy is a proud member of the Play Production Team. She has appeared in live showcases including Cinderella and The Greatest Family Story, where her enthusiasm and commitment shine through during every theater performance. Her family never misses a performance, cheering her on and celebrating each new milestone.
Remy has also taken part in TLC’s annual dance recitals, Spectrum and Reflections, captivating audiences with expressive movement and beautiful costumes. Through ballet classes and other dance classes held in TLC’s Black Box Theatre, she continues to build grace, confidence and stage presence.
Creativity and Kindness
Beyond theatre and dance, Remy enjoys exploring many creative outlets available through the Creative Arts Day Program for adults with disabilities. In ceramics classes and knitting classes, she creates thoughtful handmade pieces for her family and contributes her work to TLC’s monthly Pop-Up Markets. Her pottery often reflects her personality and care for others, and the pride she feels in sharing her creations is unmistakable.
The program also offers a variety of fine arts classes and other hands-on opportunities that encourage creativity and self-expression.
Remy also enjoys giving back to the community. She volunteers at events and visits residents at Pacifica and AvantGarde Senior Living Centers, as well as local women’s clubs in Granada Hills and Northridge, bringing warmth and joy wherever she goes. These experiences are part of TLC’s broader life skills program for adults with disabilities, which encourages independence, confidence and meaningful community engagement.
One of Remy’s favorite parts of the program is the strong sense of connection she shares with staff and classmates. Known for greeting instructors warmly and checking in on others, she brings kindness and positivity to every class.
Remy’s journey from a quiet young woman to a vibrant performer and artist is a powerful reminder of how creativity, community and opportunity can help individuals grow and thrive. Her story is just one of many unfolding every day at TLC.
