In 2024, Vanessa Quick made a life-changing decision. After living with her mother for most of her life, she moved into TLC’s Donna House. It was more than a new address. It was a powerful step toward independence, growth, and self-discovery.
From the moment she arrived, she embraced her new home. Vanessa formed meaningful friendships with fellow residents and began building a community that feels like family. Each day brought new routines, responsibilities, and opportunities to grow.
Finding Her Voice Through TLC’s Creative Arts Adult Program
While her residential journey was unfolding, another transformation was taking place inside the Creative Arts Program at TLC.
Though she may seem quiet at first, her inner world is rich with imagination and insight. She is a passionate storyteller with a deep love for literature, especially the works of Edgar Allen Poe. She speaks thoughtfully about art, music, and the authors who inspire her.
Vanessa’s days are filled with ceramics classes, painting, dance lessons, and theatre performances. It is in the theatre where her confidence has grown the most. Supported by instructors who recognize her potential, she has moved from observer to performer.
She now auditions with excitement, selects her classes with intention, and steps onto the stage with courage.
The fear that once held her back has slowly been replaced with self assurance. Programs like the Creative Arts Day Program help participants build confidence, develop life skills, and form meaningful social connections within a supportive community.
Creativity Without Limits
Navigating life in a wheelchair, Vanessa approaches each class with grace and determination. Her love for art history, especially those of Van Gogh and Picasso, influences her own creative expression. In the ceramics studio and on canvas, she explores color, texture, and movement in ways that feel deeply personal.
Vanessa’s instructors have watched her blossom. What began as quiet participation has become a bold artistic presence. In recent showcases, she captivated audiences with performances that reflected not only talent, but growth.
The transformation has been remarkable.

Today, Vanessa is a powerful example of what can happen when independence and creative opportunities intersect. As a resident and Creative Arts Program student at TLC, she continues to build confidence, friendships and artistic skills.
Her story reminds us that growth is not about speed, but about courage. It is about being given the space to explore, express, and belong.
